Since YouTube started in 2005, it has been growing rapidly ever since. As a result, there have been a number of individuals who have made a career out of their YouTube videos. The top channels on YouTube have several million subscribers and many million more viewers. What may be thought of as lucrative has turned out to be a very viable way to make money for these lucky individuals. Over time these people went from nobodies into internet celebrities, every bit as real as movie stars and musicians. Here are the top ten YouTube celebrities:

Subscribers: > 4,000,000 people

Better known by his YouTube name, CaptainSparkez, Jordan Maron is best known for his various song parodies using Minecraft textures. Additionally, he regularly posts gameplay commentary videos primarily focusing on Minecraft, but also featuring other games as well such as Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty. In total he has received more than 781,000,000 total video views and has over 4 million subscribers making him one of the most popular people on all of YouTube.

Benny Fine and Rafi Fine

YouTube name: TheFineBros

Subscribers: > 4,000,000 people

The Fine Brothers are online writers, producers, and directors known for their successful React video series. Over the years, they have received more than 500,000,000 video views. The Fine Brothers have been creating a variety of online content since 2004. Since reaching internet stardom they have been featured on The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, Variety, and MSNBC.

Subscribers: > 4,750,000 people

Described by one of the founders, Harley Morenstein, Epic Meal Time, is essentially “Jackass in the kitchen.” With more than 125 episodes, Epic Meal Time shows videos of groups of people consuming extremely high-calorie meals, typically featuring meat products, and drinking alcohol, in particular Jack Daniel’s. The series debuted in October 2010, and has since released a new episode every Tuesday.

Older brother of fellow YouTuber Jimmy Wong, Freddie graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. He also owns and manages Overcrank Media, a Los Angeles based media production company specializing in online video content. Recently in 2010,  Overcrank Media released an independent feature film called Bear. In addition to his main channel, Freddie Wong also has another 1.1 million subscribers to his alternate channel “freddiew2”, and nearly 500,000 viewers on his channel “node.”

The 21 year-old is a Spanish-speaking blogger is from Santiago, Chile. He started his YouTube career in early 2011. Outside of YouTube he also has a band called “Feeling Every Sunset” or “Sientiendo Cada Amancer” in Spanish. He is the most popular Spanish-speaking video blogger in the entire world.

Subscribers: > 8,500,000 people

Best known by his online alias PewDiePie, Felix is a Swedish video game commentator on YouTube. He specializes in horror and action video game genres. His channel is one of the quickest growing YouTube channels and is the 5th overall most subscribed to channel on the entire site. In total he has received 1.5 billion video views. In 2011, he left Chalmers University of Technology to purse a full time YouTube career.

Ryan Higa, better known as nigahiga, is best known for his YouTube comedy videos. According to Higa himself, his channel name is a combination of the Japanese word “niga” which means “rant” and is last name “Higa.” As of June 2013, his videos have received a combined total of over 1.4 billion views, making them some of the highest viewed videos of all time. Higa  grew up in Hilo, Hawaii and attended the University of Nevada.

The 31 year-old Ray William Johnson is the 3rd most subscribed to YouTube celebrity in the world. He is best known for his series Equals Three, which provides commentary on viral videos. As a result, the already popular viral video often receive a boost in popularity after Johnson gets a hold of them. A number of celebrity guests have appeared on Equals Three including Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman, Gabriel Iglesias, Kal Penn, Margaret Cho, Jason Biggs, and Timothy De La Ghetto. In May 2013, Johnson announced he signed a deal to produce a sitcom for the television network FX.

Better known as Jenna Marbles, Jenna Mourey is the most subscribed to woman in the world on YouTube. She is best known for her breakout video “How to trick people into thinking you’re good looking.” She offers a variety of advice to women around the world. Her comedic tone combined with her practical advice have made her a worldwide sensation. Her fame has now spread behind the confines of the world’s largest video site and she now regularly appears on several TV channels including MTV.

Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla

YouTube name: Smosh

Subscribers: > 10,000,000 people

This duo, known simply as Smosh, first established a presence on the internet in 2002 when they began posting hilarious flash movies.  Over the years these flash videos morphed into what would evolve into their YouTube channel. Since reaching internet stardom in early 2006, Smosh has expanded their presence by offering animated videos, videos in Spanish, and video gaming content videos. The duo currently runs seven different channel on YouTube in total.
